Preschool Portraits in Vancouver: Playful Sessions That Capture Every Child’s Personality

That awkward “say cheese” smile? We don’t do that here

If you’ve ever received a school photo where your child looks half-wrinkled, confused, or like they just saw a ghost, you’re not alone. There’s something about traditional school portraits that just misses the mark, right? Maybe it’s the outdated backgrounds. Maybe it’s the “please smile” from a stranger holding a giant camera. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because capturing a real preschooler – not just their face, but their FULL personality – takes a different approach entirely.

As a Vancouver family photographer who’s shot everything from brand-new baby yawns to mid-tantrum cookie negotiations, I can tell you this: preschool portraits can be so much more than a passport-style image. They can be art. They can be story. They can be a peek into who your child really is that year, that season, that exact messy, magical moment in their little life.

Helping real personalities shine (with emoji stickers optional)

Photographing preschoolers isn’t about sitting them in front of a paper backdrop and praying for the best. That method? Not my jam. In fact, one of the sessions that changed everything for me happened during a pop-up preschool mini session. I met a little girl who was severely autistic, and absolutely not having it. She didn’t want to be near the camera, wouldn’t engage with toys or books, and honestly, it was looking like a no-go.

But then… stickers.

She spotted a sheet of emoji stickers, and suddenly everything shifted. She started sticking them on me, my camera, the little monkey I have perched on top of my gear. Pretty soon I was covered in laughing yellow faces – and so was she. Giggling, expressive, silly, joyful… I captured more than 15 frames of her in that zone. Not because I forced it, but because I waited, listened, tried everything, and met her exactly where she was.

That’s when it clicked (pun intended). Every child is worth showing up for. And every preschooler deserves photos that reflect their actual spirit – whether that means wide-mouthed belly laughs, thoughtful stares, or serious, soulful eyes.

How I capture real preschool personalities (without bunny ears or forced grins)

1. Ditch the “say cheese” and talk Paw Patrol instead

Preschoolers don’t do well with commands like “look here and smile.” Honestly, do any of us?

What works instead is connection. I chat with your kiddo about things they love – Bluey, their dog, the weird noise spaghetti makes, or their favourite flavour of ice cream (and whether or not it’s acceptable to eat it for breakfast). These conversations aren’t small talk – they’re the bridge to real expression.

None of it is random. From the second we meet, I’m reading their cues. Shy? Silly? Alpha? I adjust. The serious kids get respected. The goofballs get silly sounds and pretend ants to stomp. I never ask for a smile, but I almost always get one. Usually a real one. Sometimes a smirk. Occasionally, a laugh-snort combo.

2. Embrace the chaos and lean into the ridiculous

This might sound like a weird professional tip, but here’s the deal: preschoolers want authenticity. And to gain their trust, I become one of them. That means losing my adult “cool,” leaning into toilet humour if that’s what they’re into (#sorrynotsorry), and exaggerating reactions for maximum giggles.

Want to hear a preschooler cackle? Tell them that cows go “Baa” and pigs say “Moo.” Every time, they’ll correct you with the gleeful authority of someone who JUST nailed the answer on Peppa Pig Trivial Pursuit. That moment of proud correction? Pure magic, camera-ready.

3. Celebrate every kind of kid – not just the smiley ones

Let’s be real: not every preschooler is bubbly and loud. Some kids are thinkers, deep feelers, reserved observers. And that’s beautiful too.

A great portrait doesn’t require a smile. It just requires truth. That soft frown of concentration, that deep gaze, that moment of calm in a whirlwind of toddlerhood? Those are just as worth celebrating. They tell who your child is in this fleeting season – not just what they look like on Picture Day.

📸 P.S. I never settle for one standard photo. Your gallery will show the many sides of your preschooler: serious, silly, sweet, stubborn, and every shade in between.

Why these portraits matter (and aren’t just another checkbox)

Let’s be honest: an iPhone can show you what your child looks like this year.

But these portraits? They show who your child is this year.

That little way they crinkle their nose when telling a silly story. The squint when they’re deep in thought. The post-lunch muffin crumbs on their chin. These preschool years are short and weirdly stretchy all at once, and every bit of them matters.

And if you’re a preschool director wondering if it’s worth the schedule shuffle? Here’s my take: it’s a gift to your families. Like a surprise field trip that comes with heirloom artwork. Helping parents remember not just what their kid looked like, but exactly who they were during this wild little chapter? That’s powerful stuff.

Let’s give them more than a school photo

Preschool portraits should be joyful, soulful, and real – not some watered-down tradition we feel weirdly guilty about skipping.

If you’re a Vancouver parent who wants portraits that reflect your child’s actual spark (sticker-coated camera and all), I’m here for you. Preschool packages are available for schools across the Lower Mainland and individual families on request.

Hop over to our Parent Page to learn more or to chat about bringing playful, personality-filled portraits to your child’s school.

And hey… if your kid peels emoji stickers off my forehead mid-session, all the better. That’s the good stuff 😉
